The title’oThe Christian Cowboy”was inspired by the fact that I have seen many sculpture pieces which depicted cowboys in adventures, or in their work environments, but never in a spiritual setting. f think the following presents the mood I was trying to portray of an 1880’s working cowboy.
It has been a long week, six days of fixing fence and spotting strays. And now it was Sunday. The cowboy was far from his church. By the time he made the ride, it would no longer be the Sabbath. He put out his morning fire as the sun began to give him light. He lengthened Little Joe’s hobble to make him more comfortable, and gave him an extra handful of oats. Today would be their day to rest. The cowboy went to the creek and cleansed his body and clothing as best he could. Then very carefully selected a suitable piece of cedar. Crawled upon the rail of an old corral fence and carved a wooden cross. And as he carved, he prayed and knew that he was a part of God’s plan for this earth and a life hereafter. He was at peace…he was near his God. He was a Christian Cowboy.
